Seed Development

Our seed development programs are continually developing new, more efficient varieties with unique traits like higher yields, improved disease resistances, greater recoveries of dried product after drying, and expanded maturities to lengthen the processing season. These more robust varieties permit Sensient Dehydrated Flavors to consistently produce higher quality products for our customers with better dried product appearance, greater uniformity, freedom from defects, and natural low bacteria content.

Our plant breeders work closely with our Field Department, processing personnel, and growers to identify superior varieties. Hundreds of new breeding lines are produced each year in our Research Nursery and then evaluated in trials conducted in growers' fields. Elite lines from these trials are nominated as potential new varieties. Our in-house Seed Department contracts with specialized seed growers to carefully propagate the seeds. We utilize tissue culture techniques in our laboratory to develop and propagate superior strains of virus-free garlic.

Many consider plant breeding to be an extremely slow process. Fortunately Sensient Dehydrated Flavors has over four decades of experience and numerous improved selections at all stages of the variety development process designed to meet our current and future needs.
